Greenwich is a leading London university based at the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, providing high-quality educational activities, research and enterprise. The Department of Economics and International Development is committed to conducting innovative and impactful research, and to developing students' employability.

The role of Professor and Head of the Department of International Business and Economics (IBE) is to strengthen the Department’s performance in student academic performance, student experience and employment outcomes; and to increase the quality, amount and impact of the research conducted in the Department.

Society conducted a national search on behalf of the University, with a focus on individuals with administrative experience leading research groups, modules, or programmes, or with Head or Deputy Head responsibilities within the broad fields of Economics and International Business disciplines.

Professor Denise Hawkes was appointed to the role from her position as the Academic Head of Research, Consultancy and Knowledge Transfer for the Centre for Doctoral Education at the UCL Institute of Education. Denise had previously been a Senior Lecturer at the University of Greenwich and hold a PhD from Queen Mary, University of London.

Following the conclusion of the search the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Head of the Faculty of Business, Jon Sibson commented:

“Gareth Duxbury and Neena Patel helped us with the appointment of a Professor/Head of Department for our International Business and Economics Department. They mobilised quickly, grasped the brief well, and were effective in generating good quality applications from some interesting candidates who would not have been identified without a search process. Gareth and Neena were both very professional and pleasant to work with”.
