Stonewall has appointed Nancy Kelley as Chief Executive, and Tracey Burley as Chief Operating Officer.

For over thirty years, Stonewall has been working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bi and trans people regardless of their age, ethnicity, faith, gender or background. Stonewall’s Board approached Society to support on these appointments following a period of organizational growth, and during a period of interim leadership. Together, the newly appointed CEO and COO will lead Stonewall’s team in defining and delivering a sustainable future strategy that improves lives across LGBT communities.

In the CEO, we sought an exceptional campaigner, communicator and influencer, with proven leadership creating social change and tackling structural inequalities. In the COO, we sought a leader seasoned in operational excellence, able to build and embed a quality planning and performance culture throughout the charity. Both projects involved cross-sector, highly bespoke searches, and Society explored these opportunities with candidates from wide range of professional backgrounds and lived experiences.

Nancy Kelley joins from The National Centre for Social Research, a leading independent social research institute. Previously Nancy worked in a range of policy and strategy roles at social justice organizations including Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Refugee Council and Barnardo’s, as well as a Delivery Manager in the Department for Work and Pensions in the UC digital team.

Tracey Burley brings over 15 years of public service experience working at non-profit social enterprises, where she led on corporate strategy and operational improvement programmes. She also founded Pure Consulting in 2019 to help SMEs, charities and public sector organizations perform better through sustained change management work.

Sheldon Mills, Chair of Stonewall, said of Society’s partnership: “We turned to Society to help us find our new CEO because we knew we needed a completely fresh approach. And we certainly got it. They identified a strong field of people who not only met our brief in terms of skills and experience - but also in terms of potential. In Society we had a partner who advised, guided and coached both our nomination committee and the candidates to ensure a positive experience. Not only would I not hesitate to recommend them, I already have!”

Nancy Kelley remarked: “Tanya and the team at Society were supportive and professional throughout the recruitment and selection process. It was clear from the outset that they had a genuinely informed perspective on Stonewall and its future, along with an open mind about the kind of leader that might meet the brief. At all times I felt they were committed to the right outcome for the organization but also respectful of me as a candidate – a tricky balance at times! I would definitely recommend the team.”

Tracey Burley commented: “My experience of working with Society and Tanya in particular, was outstanding. I have dealt with many recruitment Consultants, but never I have encountered such professionalism and incredible communication during what is always a testing time. In particular I got a real sense that Tanya was focussed on creating the right fit for both Stonewall and me. This is something that is critical to all parties and I am now incredibly excited to be joining Stonewall during what will be very challenging times.”
