Prominent NGO Country Director appointed as the new CEO of AKES Kenya

Society is delighted to announce the appointment of Apollo Gabazira, currently Country Director for Care International in Rwanda, as the new CEO of AKES Kenya.

AKES (Aga Khan Education Services) is one of the largest private educational networks in the developing world. As an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), it is dedicated to achieving long-term improvements in the lives of the world’s poorest people. AKES currently operates over 200 schools and advanced educational programmes across sub-Saharan Africa, and Central and South Asia. It provides a diverse mix of quality pre-school, primary, secondary, and higher secondary education services to more than 65,000 students around the world. Within Kenya AKES operates 11 schools which together employ 278 teachers and educate over 5,000 students.

As CEO, Apollo will be responsible for helping to lead AKES’ ambitious change agenda, whilst simultaneously managing and strengthening its existing Kenyan operations.

Apollo Gabazira has worked for Care International since 1998, holding key leadership roles across Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda. He gained his undergraduate degree from Makerere University in Uganda and has subsequently picked up an MBA from Royal Holloway, University of London, in the UK.

Apollo begins his new role in June and we wish him every success.
