RMIT University appoints new Dean of the School of Fashion and Textiles

Dr Alice Payne has joined RMIT University as Dean of the School of Fashion and Textiles.

RMIT is a global university of technology, design and enterprise in which teaching, research and engagement are central to achieving positive impact and creating life-changing experiences for its students. The University’s purpose is to offer life-changing experiences for its students, and to help shape the world with research, innovation, teaching and industry engagement.

RMIT’s School of Fashion and Textiles is Australia’s premier education and research institution for the fashion and textiles fields with strong global standing and impact. The Dean of the School of Fashion and Textiles will provide leadership in the University in relation to teaching and learning, research, and professional, industry and community engagement, and to contribute to the strategic direction setting of the College of Design and Social Context and the wider University.

Society was tasked to assist RMIT University by conducting an extensive global search to look for talented strong leaders to provide strategic and academic leadership to the School through ensuring the continuous improvement of the School’s learning and teaching activities as well as managing its research and development activities.

The appointed candidate was Dr Alice Payne, currently Professor in Fashion at Queensland University of Technology. A researcher and fashion designer by background, she is also a program leader in Centre for a Waste-Free World, and co-founder and leader of the research group, TextileR: Future Textile Industries. Alice’s research focuses on environmental and social sustainability issues throughout the life cycle of clothing. She has examined perspectives on sustainability along the cotton value chain, the cultural and material flows of post-consumer textile waste, and design processes of mass-market product developers, independent fashion designers, and social entrepreneurs. She is author of the book Designing Fashion’s Future and is an award-winning designer and educator.
