University of Sussex appoints two new Council members

Katie Ghose, Chief Executive of the Electoral Reform Society, and Dr Angela Smith, Chief Executive of GlobeRisk, will be joining the main board of the University of Sussex.

The University of Sussex is building on the success of its 50th anniversary year. Ranked 14th in the UK in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2014-2015, over recent years it has seen significant achievements in delivering ambitious objectives outlined in its strategic plan, ‘Making the Future’. The University has over 14,000 students with staff and students from more than 120 countries.

The University came to Society as it was looking to appoint independent members to its governing body. They were seeking committed, insightful, active Council members to join an already highly skilled group. Candidates were expected to possess significant board level and governance experience, a strong intellect and a willingness to constructively challenge and interact with all members of Council.

Katie Ghose is currently Chief Executive of the Electoral Reform Society, where she has been a prominent commentator on a number of initiatives including reform of the House of Lords. A barrister by training, she was previously the Director of the British Institute of Human Rights and prior to this held a number of roles in the charity sector. These included Parliamentary and Campaigns Manager for Age Concern England, Campaigns Manager for the Child Accident Prevention Trust and Parliamentary Liaison Officer for Citizens Advice.

Dr Angela Smith is currently Chief Executive of GlobeRisk. Following a doctorate in theoretical astrophysics and an early stint teaching mathematics at the University of Oxford, Angela joined the City in 1983. She is qualified as an actuary, accountant, risk specialist, and treasurer. Her career includes a period as a management consultancy partner at KPMG as well as numerous senior executive positions across the domestic and international financial services sectors.
