RMIT University appoints new Dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Design

Professor Dr Vivian Mitsogianni has been appointed by RMIT University as Dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Design.

RMIT University is a global university of technology, design and enterprise in which teaching, research and engagement are central to achieving positive impact and creating life-changing experiences for its students. The University’s purpose is to offer life-changing experiences for its students, and to help shape the world with research, innovation, teaching and industry engagement.

The School of Architecture and Urban Design at RMIT University comprises of three distinct ‘Built Environment’ disciplines of Architecture, Interior Design and Landscape Architecture. Through a consistent lens of creative practice they explore design of cities, environments and landscape with a focus on venturous practice, social change, and emergent technologies. The School aims to address compelling, contemporary issues of climate change, globalisation, and rapid urbanisation, in ways that help drive cultural change through design. The Dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Design will be responsible for the leadership, strategic direction and management of one of the largest schools at RMIT University.

Society was tasked to assist RMIT University by conducting an extensive global search to look for talented strong leaders to provide strategic and academic leadership to the School through ensuring the continuous improvement of the School’s learning and teaching activities as well as managing its research and development activities.

The appointed candidate was Professor Dr Vivian Mitsogianni, currently Associate Dean and Head of Architecture in the School of Architecture and Urban Design at RMIT University. Vivian is a registered Architect and Director of the collaborative M@ STUDIO architects, which focusses on architectural design research. She curated the Master of Architecture Design Studios, where she commissioned a number of studios by leading venturous local and international design practices. Vivian continued to develop her strong expertise in facilitating processes for design innovation by combining experimental design practice research and ‘real world’ industry-linked projects at RMIT Architecture as well as through her role as the founding research leader of the Future Fabric of Cities flagship research program in the RMIT Design Research Institute.
